ＯＨ　ＹＯＯ　ＲＡＮ

There are hundreds of standards in the world. Unfortunately, all the people unconsciously have the same standards in their mind, most of those are related to market economy. Those standards dominate our lives. However, people, we, never take a defiant attitude toward those things but accept it. What happens in art world is not much different. Almost same things happen. That’s the reality and that’s exactly what I want to talk about in my works. 

Art world, which had to be pure and not to be related to money making things, has ironically been dominated and judged by economy of idea. Principle of economy perfectly has the upper hand over any art values. The most important thing is not artistic value but how it could be marketable and make big money. Although that kind of standards existing in art world was originally made by the “Establishment”, public become to believe it and judge the world, especially art world, according to it.  All of us know that judging art work and artist by that kind of standards (I mean, how much money it could be) is wrong. But we just accept it, not taking any offense to it. That’s the problem and my works reflect it. 

I represent the problem (existing in art world), by using plastic wrap. Plastic wrap is the thing having both sides; it is disposable but never decay. In other world, It has both disposability and eternity. So I copy some popular work of the greatest modern artist on those plastic wrap-which cuts both way. By doing so, copy of these art works become both disposable and eternal. Throughout this work, I want to criticize the reality of art world, judging all the things by standards of economy. Though all those standards which exist in real life are always changing, it will always still exist right next to us.

In my work, the plastic wraps which contain the copy of popular art works, is naturally blended into the landscape. Those plastic wrap (blended into the landscape) become to have the sublime beauty, exactly same as general landscape paintings do. It means standards of real world, symbolized as those plastic wraps, become sublime. So My work extends to human frailty, overwhelmed by the force of standards based on market economy.

Choosing painting as an expression method effectively reveals the bare fact, our passiveness towards the reality, never defying the world dominated by the market economy. Compared to installation work, which makes audiences actively participate into work, painting, which I choose, make people rather passive. When people appreciate such paintings, there is nothing to do without looking at it. That’s why I using paintings. It is the most perfect method to show our passiveness towards world.

The audience in front of my work will reflect on their passiveness. We all know the value criterion based on market economy is something really light. But we also know, nevertheless, it never be changed. It makes us more passive. 

I have tried to show this problem throughout my work and I hope people once self-examine themselves when they encounter my work.
